Truvolo Drive is a new app that can make your car a connected device that tracks driving habits and diagnostics.
With the tagline "Smarter driving begins today," Truvolo is looking to bring in crowdfunding through an Indiegogo page.
Families with beginning or teenage drivers should be especially interested in the app, which plugs into the car's computer and tracks how each driver performs behind the wheel, Yahoo Tech reported.
Similar to devices like Automatic and Dash, Drive plugs into the vehicle's on-board diagnostics port, which is usually under the glove box or steering wheel. It can record about 400 hours of driving data and alert you when the car needs an oil change or tune up, according to Yahoo Tech.
The useful information from Drive is fairly straightforward: distance driven in the car, average and maximum speeds and the amount of gas used.
According to the Yahoo Tech review, the Drive web portal in the test version shows complex diagnostic information only a mechanic will understand. The data will become simpler and more streamlined when the app is more developed, Truvolo CEO Jaideep Jain told Yahoo Tech.
Drive, which connects to an Android device through Bluetooth, is different from other apps on the market because it can track more than one driver, not just an individual car.
"If your teenagers borrow the family beater, Truvolo will identify them based on their phone and record their driving data separately from yours," Yahoo Tech's Dan Tynan noted.
"It will then give them a rating (five cars = could drive an ambulance; one car = danger to themselves and others) and issue alerts based on your criteria."
The device also tracks unusual driving movements such as slamming on the brakes or swerving suddenly.
Truvolo Drive costs $99 with no monthly fees. The project has brought in around $28,600 of a $100,000 goal with 19 days left. Indiegogo supporters should receive a beta Android version of the device in April, followed by a shipping version for Android and iOS in June.
