Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton was able to walk away from a high-speed crash during the first day of Formula One pre-season testing in Spain, according to Reuters.
The crash occurred due to a car failure less than five hours after Mercedes introduced the new W05.
The U.K. native was in the middle of his 18th lap of the day at the time of the crash. The front wing came off the vehicle during the incident, witnesses confirmed to Reuters.
Hamilton also crashed during the first test of 2013 for Mercedes after switching from McLaren last year.
Formula One is switching its 2.4 liter V8 for a new turbocharged 1.6 liter V6 in an attempt to focus more on fuel economy.
Mercedes presented the new car at the Jerez pitlane a little after dawn, which was followed by the introduction of Red Bulls new RB 10 challenger.
Four hours after the test began, Red Bull's world champion Sebastian Vettel still failed to make an appearance as his team was still working on an undisclosed problem that occurred overnight, according to Reuters.
"Obviously the car is still extremely new and still being completed as we speak and I think there was just a small setup issue that the guys want to have correct before we go out on track," principal Christian Horner said according to Reuters.
Hamilton will drive the number 44 car during his second year with Mercedes. He said before the test run that the vehicle looked "fantastic."
"So aggressive but full of really nice details as well. I'm excited to find out how the new power unit feels to drive, to hear how it sounds from the cockpit and to compare the job we have done relative to the competition," said Hamilton.
Ten of the 11 teams are in Jerez for the test. Lotus is the only team not to show up.
