Chevrolet has revealed its 2015 Corvette will be equipped with a new rear-wheel-drive eight-speed automatic transmission, according to Edmunds.
"It's going to happen," said Monte Doran, a Chevrolet spokesman.
Doran would not confirm if the base Corvette Stingray or the Corvette Z06 will get the new transmission, however.
Rumors of the new transmission was mentioned in a publication posting by the International Society of Automotive Engineers recently. The paper, which was authored by General Motors engineers, will be published in April 2014.
The paper says the automatic transmission is known as the "8L90."
"The transmission replaces the venerable 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission," the paper reads. "The objectives behind creation of this transmission are improved fuel economy, performance and NVH."
Doran also didn't confirm how much the Corvette's fuel economy will improve thanks to the new transmission.
In comparison, the 2014 Corvette Stingray is available with a seven-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed automatic transmission.
The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 will debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.
