A video of an exploding whale has captured the attention of millions of people all-over the world this week, as the clip has eclipsed 2 million views as of press time.
The video, which is pretty graphic compared to other YouTube viral videos, shows the guts, bodily fluids, and blood of a sperm whale during a recent explosion.
Despite the overall outcry for the video, animal experts say that the incident is a common post-mortem event for many large animals.
A broadcast on Science Channel earlier this year called Outrageous Acts of Science included a segment where four whales had turned up on a beach in the Netherlands. Biologists showed up to take care of the carcasses, but first they had to slice into the whales to remove pockets of gas inside.
During the program, as one biologist was cutting into a whale, the whale was so backed up with gas it exploded, sending innards soaring across the beach. The scene was nearly identical to the recent whale explosion, and experts say it happens more than people think.
"The animal was more than two days old when we took it so we knew there would be some pressure on the inside, but nothing like what happened," said the biologist in the exploding whale video is Bjarni Mikkelsen, according to Mail Online.
The whale in the viral video ate a lot of different things, including other creatures which started to "putrefy" inside its stomach and when it was cut into, the whale released a lot of gases, according to biologist Adam Ruben.
"There's going to be three gases that are going to be coming out of this whale that are not going to be nice," Ruben said, according to The Inquisitr. "You're going to have methane, which is basically farts; hydrogen sulphide, which is rotten eggs; and you're going to have ammonia, which smells a lot like cat pee."
