Drivers are willing to consider using driverless cars if it means there car insurance payments will be lower, according to a new study.
The study shows that nine out of 10 drivers surveyed said they would consider purchasing a self-driving vehicle if it meant a paying less for car insurance, according to CarInsurance.com.
Consumers were asked if they would buy or would consider purchasing a vehicle if they could get an 80-percent discount on auto insurance.
Approximately 20 percent of drivers used for the study said they would "gladly turn over the keys" even if they didn't get a discount on their car insurance.
"Our survey shows cheaper insurance will greatly influence consumer acceptance (of autonomous vehicles)," said Des Toups, CarInsurance.com managing editor, in a statement. "Some of the liability of operating a car will doubtless be assumed by the manufacturers. But a lot of the decrease in rates could come simply because there would be many fewer accidents."
A number of companies have been working hard to introduce an autonomous vehicle. Google made headlines last year when it released a video of a blind man using a driverless Toyota Prius. The video has received over 5 million views since 2012.
Daimler, GM, and Nissan have all said they'll introduce a self-driving car by 2020.
Last year, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a law establishing the safety and performance standards for self-driving vehicles in California. After the bill was signed, Google had a number of conversations with automakers and conducted autonomous vehicle technology on a Toyota Prius.
Last May, U.S. transportation officials issued guidelines for the development of self-driving vehicles, which included "recommendations" for those who are writing laws governing self-driving technology.
