A family of six were killed in a car crash near Columbus, Ohio, on Oct. 18 after being hit by a police vehicle driving to the scene of a robbery, according to Reuters.
An officer from Upper Arlington was responding to an armed robbery at a McDonald's fast-food restaurant when he hit a Toyota Corolla at an intersection carrying a husband, wife and their four daughters, including a 2-year-old, the Perry Township Police Department confirmed to Reuters.
No one in the family was wearing a seat belt, and the 2-year-old was not in a child safety seat when the incident occurred at 1:35 a.m.
"That car was just totaled, and they probably died instantly," said Chief Robert Oppenheimer of Perry Township police, according to the Associated Press.
Autopsies have been scheduled.
The unidentified officer was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
"We just don't know anything about the condition of the intersection at the time of the accident," Oppenheimer said. "We've had no witnesses step forward. The only thing we have is the driver of the cruiser, and he's in the hospital, and we're unable to talk to him at this time."
The officer was using the cruiser's lights and siren before the crash, said Perry Township Police Lieutenant Steve Cesaro.
Cesaro added that he did not know how fast the two vehicles were going when the accident took place. A dash cam was able to prove that the officer had the green light and the Corolla pulled in front of the vehicle.
"We are investigating that, and it should take about a week or so before we will know," Cesaro said.
