General Motors' new 2014 Dodge Durango Special Service vehicle, which is aimed at police, fire and fleet customers, debuted officially this week.

Production begins later this year, according to the automaker.

Several modifications to the Durango Special Service can be made, including the option to remove the third-row seats and a rear cargo area with under-floor storage compartments.

Heavy-duty upgrades include brakes, battery, a 220-amp alternator, water pump and engine oil cooler. A load-leveling suspension is standard, according to Chrysler.

The new SUV can be equipped with a number of options, like skid plates for all-wheel-drive vehicles, a back-up camera, an Uconnect system with mobile access, and engine heater.

The 2014 Durango is equipped with a new standard eight-speed transmission for both the six- and eight-cylinder engines, according to GM.

The automaker also recently showed off a few "hero" versions of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado.

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 Volunteer Firefighter concept and 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Black Ops concept will be on display at the 2013 SEMA Show.

Pricing for the Special Service vehicle has not been announced.
