A new kind of pen needle will make it easier for those living with diabetes to take their daily shot of insulin, BD Medical announced in a recent press release.
With EasyFlow Technology, people with diabetes will be able to give themselves injections more quickly and easily.
"We are confident that our new EasyFlow Technology will provide the most comfortable injection experience to help enable patients to adhere more easily to their therapy regimens and ultimately improve their outcomes," said Linda Tharby, president of BD Medical, an international medical technology company that is based in New Jersey.
In a clinical study published in Clinical Therapeutics, 61 percent of patients using the new pen needle reported they needed less thumb force to inject, and 49 percent of patients reported less time to inject than with their usual pen needle.
The medical technology company improved the product by increasing the space inside the needle while maintaining its gauge size, which increased the flow rate in controlled laboratory testing by up to 149 percent versus competitive pen needles, according to the press release.
EasyFlow Technology is currently available in the U.S. and Canada on all BD Medical Ultra-Fine Nano 4mm Pen Needles with PentaPoint Comfort and will be available in many European countries in the coming months.
Insulin regulates sugar levels in diabetics, many of whom will take the medication for the rest of their lives, often with multiple injections per day.
An estimated 26 million people in the U.S. live with diabetes. If current trends continue, as many as one in three U.S. adults will have diabetes by 2050, said the press release. The total annual cost of diagnosed diabetes in the United States is an estimated $245 billion.
