Indy driver Dario Franchitti is currently recovering at a Houston hospital after having surgery to temporarily stabilize a broken right ankle suffered during a crash this past weekend.
Franchitti also suffered two spinal fractures and a concussion during the crash, which occurred on the final lap of the Grand Prix of Houston, according to USA Today. His car went airborne and hit a catchfence during the race, sending debris into the grandstand, which injured 13 fans and an IndyCar official.
"I would also like to send my best to all the fans involved in the accident and hope that everyone is alright," Franchitti said in the statement.
Target Chip Ganassi Racing spokesman Kelby Krauss confirmed this week that his driver will have a second surgery on his ankle after he is transferred to Indianapolis. Franchitti could be transferred "within a few days" according to Krauss.
Franchitti was taken to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center by ambulance, where he underwent surgery on Oct. 6.
"Thank you to everyone for all the well wishes," Franchitti said in a statement released by Target Chip Ganassi Racing. "They mean a lot to me."
Actress Ashley Judd, who married the driver in 2001, tweeted after the crash that her and the family's dogs were on their way to Houston. Judd and Franchitti spilt up recently after 11 years of marriage, but many people think the crash could halt any plans for a divorce.
