Students from the Netherlands have broken the 0-to-60 mph record for an electric vehicle, according to Wired.

As if that wasn't impressive enough, the teens the Delft University of Technology set a new record in a vehicle they built themselves.

The vehicle, called the DUT13 went from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.15 seconds, destroying the previous record of 2.68 seconds.

The DUT13 even broke the 0-to-60 record for a production car, which was 2.3 seconds, set by a 500-hp Ariel Atom V-8 back in 2010.

"We thought that under these conditions we'd be happy with 2.30," team manager Tim de Moree said to Wired. "But we really didn't expect 2.15."

The DUT13 is powered by a four-wheel mounted electric motors, each capable of producing 33 hp. The total output is 132 hp.

Behind the wheel during the historic run was Marly Kuijpers, the smallest and lightest member of the team.

The entire vehicle weighs just 320 lbs, thanks to a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic. The lithium-ion battery pack ads just 95 lbs to the total weight.

Even though the DUT13 was made strictly to showcase its performance potential, it bested some of the most well-known and respected EVs ever produced, including the Bugatti Veyron, which has been tested going 0-62 in 2.46 seconds.
