Ikea has decided to start selling solar panels to customers in the U.K. and if sales are good they may decide to sell them in the U.S. as well.
"We will evaluate the success of the UK roll out before making this decision on a market-by-market basis about rolling out in other countries," an Ikea spokesperson said according to ABC News.
The furniture chain, known for its cheap prices, hopes to make solar energy an "affordable reality" for everyone in the U.K.
Customers can purchase a standard 3.36kW photovoltaic system for a semi-detached home for around $9,200. A solar finance package is also available which requires no money up front.
The panels resemble flat screen TV according to Ikea. The panels will be sold at 17 different Ikea stores in the U.K. over the next 10 months.
"We know that our customers want to live more sustainably and we hope working with Hanergy to make solar panels affordable and easily available helps them do just that," said Joanna Yarrow, head of sustainability IKEA UK and Ireland, in a press statement.
Installation is offered in a collaboration with Chinese energy company Hanergy.
Trained Solar Advisors will design a system for each individual house by using a simulation tool from Ikea. A nine-step installation process managed by a Hanergy Web Portal
"We want to make a greener, more sustainable way of life attractive and easy for as many people as possible, so in addition to our collaboration with Hanergy, we're dedicated to expanding our range of sustainable products that help customers save energy, water and sort waste four-fold by 2020," said Yarrow.
