Apple has launched a new program that will allow Apple users to trade in their old iPhones at Apple stores for credit towards a newer phone.
The trade in announcement comes just weeks before Apple is expected to unveil its next iPhone device.
Apple has yet to announce what the next device will be called, but it's commonly agreed by most media outlets that it'll either be the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6.
A cheaper smartphone option, called the iPhone 5C, is also expected at the Sept. 10 press event.
"iPhones hold great value. So, Apple Retail Stores are launching a new program to assist customers who wish to bring in their previous-generation iPhone for reuse or recycling," said Apple spokeswoman Amy Bessette in a press statement. "In addition to helping support the environment, customers will be able to receive a credit for their returned phone that they can use toward the purchase of a new iPhone."
The most Apple will credit someone for a device is $280 according to the Wall Street Journal. Store credit must be used for a new iPhone, not another device.
Before trading in anything, make sure you're getting the most you can for your old device. This can be figured out by knowing the condition of your phone.
To figure out how much a device is worth, Apple and cellphone providers will want to know if there has been any water damage to the device. Don't try to pull a fast one on them however, as there is a small sensor in the headphone jack that will tell them if you're lying according to Apple.
Then they'll want to know if everything is working properly and if there are any scratches or other damages to the device.
Apple on average will offer $250 for an iPhone 5, $200 for the iPhone 4S, and $140 for an iPhone 4.
Amazon offers approximately $359 for an iPhone 5, $214 for an iPhone 4S, and $180 iPhone 4.
Make sure you back up your device before trading it in as well as you'll lose all your data once you do so.
Apple already had an online trade in program that lets users trade older iPhones, iPads, and iPods for an Apple gift card.
