The 2014 Honda Odyssey became the first minivan to earn 2013 Top Safety Pick Overall Safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), according to a company press release.

The Odyssey earned an overall GOOD rating in the IIHS's tough small overlap frontal crash test. The small overlap frontal crash test were designed to mimic what could happen when the front corner of a car collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole.

"Honda's commitment to safety is perhaps best demonstrated by the fact that we achieved this high standard in a mid-cycle refresh of the 2014 Honda Odyssey," said Art St. Cyr, vice president of product planning and logistics at American Honda, in a press statement. "Honda's goal is to continuously advance the safety performance of every Honda vehicle to fulfill the trust our customers place in the Honda brand."

The minivan was designed with an Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure. The ACE body structure has also been applied to the 2013 Civic and Accord vehicles as well, according to the automaker.

The Civic is the only vehicle in the compact class to earn a rating of "Good" in the small overlap crash test.

"Safety is high on the list for parents when it comes to shopping for a family vehicle," said Institute President Adrian Lund. "Consumers look for models with the highest safety ratings. Honda is ahead of many of its competitors in building state-of-the-art crashworthiness into its vehicles."

Honda has made the Odyssey available with a number of new safety features including: Vehicle Stability Assist with traction control, an Anti-lock Braking System, side curtain airbags, and front side airbags.
