A bronze ring was discovered by archaeologists in Bulgaria recently that possibly could have been used to commit a number of political murders during the 14th century.
The ring is over 600 years old and was found in the excavation site of Cape Kailakra by archaeologists, a location where Bulgarian aristocrats lived, according to a press release about the dig.
Over 30 other pieces of jewelry were also discovered at the site, like pearl earrings and gold rings, but the bronze ring is what has dig leader Bonnie Petrunova and others so excited.
Archaeologists said that a small cavity is drilled into the side of the ring, which was "probably" used to hide poison to murder people.
"I have no doubt that the hole was deliberately set," Petrunova said in the press release. "The hole is made so the poison can be added at any given moment."
The ring is believed to have been imported from either Spain or Italy according to Petrunova, who is also deputy director of Bulgaria's National Archaeology Museum.
When used correctly, the owner of the ring could pour a lethal posion into an enemy's meal or drink.
The ring appears to be designed for a pinky finger of a man's right hand. The ring was probably used by wealthy men to try gaining more power from rival political aristocrats.
Petrunova said that she's positive the ring is the oldest proven case of "serial murder."
"This explains many of the unexplained deaths among nobles and aristocrats close to Dobrotitsa," according to the press release.
