Hyundai Recall: 260,000 Vehicles Called Back Over Axle and Corrosion Issues

Hyundai is recalling 259,000 vehicles over two separate issues according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The first recall involves 215,000 Sonatas and 24,000 Azeras from the 2006-10 model years.

The Sonatas and Azera's rear cross member may rust, causing issues with controlling the vehicle according to the NHTSA.

The second recall involves 20,000 2013 Santa Fe Sport vehicles equipped with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. A recall was issued for the Santa Fe because the front axle shaft might break.

No injuries or accidents have occurred due to either recall according to company spokesman Jim Trainor, who spoke with The New York Times.

The vehicles are only being recalled in certain locations that "rely on road salt during the winter" according to Trainor.

The locations include: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

Salt can apparently corrode the rear suspension crossmember, which is part of the vehicle's frame, according to the Associated Press.

The crossmember may detach from the control arms that leads to the wheels, which could increase the chance of a crash.

Hyundai will begin informing owners next month according to the Associated Press. Dealers will inspect vehicles and repair the defective parts, free of charge.
