Former Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart was involved in a four-car pileup on Aug. 5 and left Southern Iowa Speedway with a broken leg.

Stewart was taken away in an ambulance to a local hospital where it was revealed Stewart broke the tibia and fibula bones in his lower right leg according to USA Today.

The NASCAR veteran underwent surgery and is reportedly resting still as of press time. He'll miss at least one race.

A replacement driver has yet to be announced for this weekend's Sprint Cup race at Watkinds Glen International according to NASCAR.

Stewart was driving a winged 360 c.i. sprinter in Oskaloose with the American Sprint Car Series and was leading the pack when a lapped car "spun in front of him" according to USA Today. Stewart hit the lapped vehicle and his car flipped.

The driver has to be helped out of the car before being put on a stretcher according to witnesses.

"First and foremost, we're concerned about Tony and making sure he's all right," said Brian Brown, who won the race, according to The Des Moines Register. "He's a huge asset to our sport, especially sprint car racing and an icon in the whole motor sports field. Anytime you see him wreck like that and then leave in an ambulance, it's never good. Hopefully he's okay. We weren't going to win that race. We were probably going to run third or fourth."

The 42-year-old driver has been involved in three crashes since July alone.

Last week Stewart flipped his car at Ohsweken Speedway in Canada, and on July 16 he caused a pileup at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.

He was asked last week about his latest crash and didn't seem too worried.

"You mortals have got to learn," Stewart said. "You guys need to watch more sprint car videos and stuff. It was not a big deal. It's starting to get annoying this week about that, so that was just an average sprint car wreck. When they wreck they get upside down like that. That was not a big deal."

Stewart is currently in 11th place in the NASCAR standings with just one victory so far this season.
