Third Shift at Kansas City Ford Pickup Plant Adds 900 New Jobs

Ford announced this weekend it will add 900 new hourly workers to its Kansas City pickup truck plant.

The automaker has seen sales decline due to shortages of some of its most popular models and Ford is determined to fix that problem according to USA Today.

During the conference call announcement, Ford said it's short on vehicles like the Escape SUV and Fusion sedan. The company is hoping the additional shift will help get more vehicles out to the public to increase sales.

"Ford F-Series sales are the strongest since 2006, and we are increasing production to meet this demand." said Doug Scott, Ford Truck Group Marketing Manager, in a press statement. "This is an important indicator that our economy is growing again. We are proud that Ford Trucks are helping more and more of our customers get back to work."

The Kansas City plant also makes the F-150, the nation's best-selling vehicle, according to the automaker's website.

The F-150 was not mentioned during the conference call, but demand for the truck has increased each month during 2013.

"Missouri's resurgent auto industry continues to drive economic growth and create good jobs for families in Kansas City and across our state," Governor Jay Nixon said according to KTTS.com. "I applaud Ford for its historic investment in this region, and congratulate the hundreds of additional autoworkers going to work building America's most popular pickup right here in the Show-Me State."

The third shift means the plant will be running at all hours of the day according to USA Today. This new plan will also lower the cost of producing each truck as well.

Ford had previously revealed a $1.1 billion expansion at its Kansas City plant, which will add 2,000 jobs. Once completed, the plant will produce the Ford Transit van according to a company press release.
