The diesel-powered 2014 BMW 328d returns 32 miles per gallon in city driving and 45 mpg on the highway according to EPA.
The all-wheel-drive option, the 328d xDrive, generates 31 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on the highway.
The 2014 328d models are equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine capable of delivering 180 hp and 280 lb.-ft. of torque.
The automaker had previously predicted that the 328d would be capable of exceeding 40 mpg, a number that is now seen as the benchmark for most car companies.
The new BMW is even better than the current diesel economy leader, the 2013 Volkswagen Passat TDI. The Passat returns 43 mpg on the highway and 31 mpg in city driving.
In comparison, the smaller 2014 Volkswagen Jetta TDI returns 30 mpg in city driving and 42 on the highway, according to the EPA.
Diesel-powered vehicles usually get between 15 to 20 percent better fuel economy than gasoline vehicles.
The new BMW will be released this fall.
The automaker will release the 328d for a base price of $39,525 for the regular and rear-drive sedan. The xDrive option will be made available for $41,525 according to BMW.
