iPhone 6 Release Date Rumors: New Device Coming This Fall, But Which One?

Jul 26, 2013 04:53 PM EDT | Matt Mercuro

If current rumors are correct, the next iPhone device will be released sometime this fall, but the bigger question is which device is Apple going to go with next: the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6?

It seems like most major media outlets have their own opinion and supposed "confirmed reports" from an Apple insider that one or the other will be released this fall.

A scheduled media event has been set for September 10 so whichever device Apple does decide to go with should be revealed on that date.

Apple won't start sending out invites to the event until iOS 7, the operating system for whichever device Apple goes with next, is completed according to the International Business Times.

If Apple goes with the iPhone 6 as its next device, a number of different specs have been already been discussed.

Current specs that have been rumored for the new device include an A7 quad core processor and a larger storage capacity according to the International Business Times. The iPhone 6 is also rumored to come in 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB, 128 GB options.

Another unconfirmed feature includes wireless charging as one of the more common complaints about the iPhone 5 is its battery capability.

On July 24 however, a report was released by ET News claiming that Apple will stop production of the iPhone 5 and instead will release not only the iPhone 5S but a cheaper-option called the iPhone lite as well.

The supposed reason Apple is getting rid of the iPhone 5 is because its touchscreen technology is "not suitable for low-volume production" according to the report by ET News.

The iPhone 5 and 5S are expected to have identical display technology according to the report.

ET News also claims Apple will begin production of the iPhone 5S later this month, and both devices could be revealed in early September which does match up with the planned media event.

Now even if the rumors are correct and if the phone is released during the fall, all it means is the next device could be out as early as September 22 or as late as December 20.

Apple sold approximately 2 million iPhone 5 smartphones in just 24 hours last September, but a release during the Thanksgiving to New Year's Day holiday period could be very tempting for Apple.

The iPhone 4S was released in mid-October, which also means Apple could decide to release its next device around then as well.

So what device do you think Apple should go with next and when would you like to see it come out?
