The new 2014 Chevrolet Impala won the best overall score for all sedans in Consumer Reports ratings.
This marks the first time a brand from the U.S. had taken home top honors in this category in over two decades according to General Motors.
"The Impala's performance is one more indicator of an emerging domestic renaissance," said Jake Fisher, director of Consumer Reports automotive testing, in a press statement. "We've seen a number of redesigned American models, including the Chrysler 300, Ford Escape and Fusion and Jeep Grand Cherokee, deliver world-class performance in our tests."
The testing group said the Impala's score jumped up from a 63 last your to an "Excellent" 95.
Only two vehicles ever have scored higher than a 95: Tesla's Model S hatchback and the BMW 135i according to Consumer Reports.
The test results are available now on ConsumerReports.com, and will also be featured in the September issue of Consumer Reports magazine.
Overall, Consumer Reports noted that they liked the new vehicle's agile handling, larger cabin space, braking capability, and acceleration.
"The Impala corners quite well for a large car, with prompt turn-in response and controlled body lean," the magazine said in its review. "Steering is nicely weighted; it's light enough for parking maneuvers and provides decent feedback. When pushed to its handling limits, the Impala proved secure, responsive, balanced, and easy to control."
Consumer Reports has yet to post the Impala's reliability rating yet as the vehicle is too new.
