A new rumor predicting the end of the iPhone 5 has made its way to the internet thanks to a report by ETNews.com.
The rumor claims that Apple is leaning towards getting rid of its popular iPhone 5 device in favor of two new phones, the iPhone 5S and the iPhone lite.
The latest report regarding Apple's next device is a head scratcher since Apple CEO Tim Cook just talked up the iPhone 5 last week, saying it's the "most popular iPhone by far."
The iPhone 5 also makes up approximately half of Apple's iPhone sales, so Cook would be taking a huge gamble by getting rid of the device while it's still selling.
The reason Apple is getting rid of the iPhone 5 is because its touchscreen technology is "not suitable for low-volume production" according to the report by ETNews. The iPhone 5 and 5S are expected to have identical display technology though according to the report.
The report claims that Apple will begin production of the iPhone 5S later this month, and both devices could be revealed as early as this September.
The rumored iPhone lite device will be a much less-expensive option of the iPhone 5S according to the report by ETNews.
This huge rumor would contradict a supposed confirmed report from an Apple employee who claimed earlier this week that Apple will bypass the iPhone 5S completely and release the iPhone 6 sometime during the fall.
If Apple does choose to go straight to the iPhone 6, they could look to either capitalize on the holiday season which runs from Thanksgiving until New Years, or they could release the device around September again when the iPhone 5 was first issued.
The report said that Apple is preparing to release the iPhone 6 in the fall, which technically runs between September 22 and December 20.
If Apple is leaning towards releasing the iPhone 5S and iPhone lite next, Apple fans may have to wait until next summer to see the iPhone 6.
So what do you think Apple should do? Get rid of the iPhone 5 in favor of two cheaper devices or just release the iPhone 6 before the new year?
