Autopsy results of a little boy who was found dead in the trunk of a car this week showed that the child likely died of hyperthermia due to excessive heat according to the Associated Press.
Investigators involved in the case have expressed regret after taking part in the all-day search in which they failed to check the trunk of the vehicle.
The child, Isaiah Theis, showed no signs of injury or mistreatment according to Chief Deputy Steve Moe.
"Would we liked to have forced entry to the car? Yeah, from my personal perspective," Moe said.
The boy's body was discovered just hours after police called off a search that involved police and over 2,000 volunteers. They looked for Theis despite the dangerous heat for many hours but never found him.
Police somehow failed to force open the trunk of a locked Chevrolet Impala which belongs to a customer of the boy's father who repairs cars for a living.
Theis' runs his business out of the family house according to the Associated Press.
The boy's body was found at 10:15 p.m. on July 17. He went missing the night before leading police to think he had just wandered off and got lost somewhere, which he had done before.
Moe said that all of the vehicles on the property were locked including the one Isaiah got stuck inside.
"I know that there's strong interest in what caused it and what things led to the boy getting in that car," Moe said according to the Associated Press. "It's just too early."
Investigators are still unsure how the child got inside the vehicle, but the death has been considered an accident instead of the result of foul play according to the Associated Press.
"Obviously this is pretty much the worst ending we could have come to," Sheriff Peter Johnson said at the end of a news conference, where he read a statement about the autopsy. "The only thing worse would have been if we would have never found him."
