2013 Honda Accord, Fit Recalled Over Fuel Tank, Electronic Stability Control Issues

Honda is recalling 1,659 2013 Accords in the U.S. to replace defective fuel tanks.

The fuel tanks in the recalled vehicles may not seal the way it should at a connection point located towards the top of the tank, creating a fuel leak according to Edmunds.

"There are no combustion sources at the rear of the vehicle to ignite fuel, but there is a small risk of fire if someone introduced such a source like a fire, cigarette, etc.," said Chris Martin, a Honda spokesman, in response to an e-mailed sent from Edmunds this week. "There have been no reports of significant fuel leakage in relation to this issue."

Honda is not aware of any crashes or injuries as a result of the problem which was found during warranty repair work.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not commented about the recall as of press time.

"(A) small risk of an actual liquid fuel leak from the top of the tank if the customer overfilled the tank or during a 'fuel-sloshing event,' but it would likely be a small amount, given the size of the potential gap where the fuel pump screws into the tank," Martin said according to Edmunds.

The recall will begin August 2 and Honda has already assured customers will be able to take their vehicles to their local dealer to have the issue fixed, free of charge.

The NHTSA did report this week that Honda is recalling 88,000 2012-13 Fit models because an electronic stability control system may not stop a skid as fast as it's designed to do so.

Originally only 44,000 Honda Fit Sport models were involved in the recall but after testing was completed the NHTSA found the same problem in 48,000 more.

Stability control systems use sensors to figure out if a car or truck is moving in direction that differs from the way a driver wants to go. The computer then applies the brake to one wheel at a time to try correcting the issue according to the NHTSA.

Honda said both recalls were voluntary but they basically had no choice once the issue was discovered. An automaker has within five business days to announce a recall or face a civil fine.

Honda will notify Accord customers of the recall on August 1, and Honda dealers will replace the fuel tank, O-ring gasket, and nut for no charge.

Customers with more questions can call Honda at 1-310-783-2000. The recall number is JA9.
