Chevrolet formally recognized its bowtie logo this week, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

Back in 1913, Chevrolet co-founder William C. Durant revealed the signature Chevy logo and the bowtie was first seen on the 1914 Chevrolet H-2 Royal Mail and the H-4 Baby Grand according to a GM press release.

The logo found a home in front of both vehicles and has been seen there on every single Chevy model since.

"The Chevrolet bowtie is recognized around the world and has become synonymous with American ingenuity," said Chevrolet Chief Marketing Officer Tim Mahoney in a press statement. "Whether you're pulling thousands of pounds through rocky terrain in a Silverado pickup or commuting in a Spark EV, Chevrolet's bowtie will always be at the very front of your travels."

Even though the logo has been around for 100 years, its origin still remains a mystery according to GM.

One of the more common beliefs is that Durant was inspired by a wallpaper design in a Parisian hotel, while another claims the logo was created based off of a newspaper advertisement.

Durant's widow and daughter have both offered different takes on the logo's origin however.

"I think it was between the soup and the fried chicken one night that he sketched out the design that is used on the Chevrolet car to this day," according to Margery Durant in her 1929 book "My Father."

Durant's widow Catherine said in 1968 that the bowtie design was created during a Hot Springs vacation in 1912. As Durant was reading a newspaper he spotted a design and said "I think this would be a very good emblem for the Chevrolet."

The world may never know how the logo came about, but it's been a hit ever since being introduced and has helped Chevrolet become one of the most well-known and respected automakers around the world.

I don't think anyone would be surprised if the bowtie was around another 100 years.
