The iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 scheduled release dates may be pushed back thanks to an issue with one of the device's screen size and Apple's fingerprint sensor.
The fingerprint sensor has been designed to be the main attraction for the iPhone 5S which will be used to authenticate user access to password-protected websites and other services according to Digitimes.
"Volume production of fingerprint-recognition and LCD driver chips for the iPhone 5S should have started at the end of June or early in July, but issues related to yield rates will delay commercial production of the two chips to the end of July, therefore affecting the initial supply of the iPhone 5S," alleged industry sources said to Digitimes.
The fingerprint sensor for the new device was designed by AuthenTech, a Florida-based company that was purchased last July by Apple for $356 million. The company is known for its "Smart Sensor," which will most likely be added to the iPhone 5S once it's released.
Sources have said the original design of the senor cause a number of different issues that lew to a lower "yield rate."
Apple outsourced the fingerprint sensors to one of its chip-making partners TSMC and chip packagers, Xintec, which are both based out of Taiwan.
"About 3 million units of the initial shipments of iPhone 5S will be delayed to the fourth quarter," sources said to Digitimes.
The Commercial Times reported this week that Apple also be dealing with issues regarding the next device's screen size.
The iPhone 5S will supposedly include a 4.3-inch display instead of the 4-inch screen the iPhone 5 comes with. This means the design of the device has to be changed, which could push back the rumored September or October release date.
