A motorcycle racer attempting to top 300 mph died on July 14 after losing control of his bike and at a former air base in northern Maine.

Bill Warner, 44, of Wimauma, Florida, hit 285 mph before he reportedly lost control of the bike, veered off the paved runway, and crashed according to Tim Kelly, race director at the Loring Timing Association.

The Loring Timing Association hosted "The Maine Event" at the Air Force Base where Warner was going to try hitting over 300 mph on a motorcycle for only the second time in his career.

Warner was still alive and talking after the crash but died about an hour and 15 minutes later at a nearby hospital according to the Associated Press.

"No one will touch Bill's achievements or be the type of racer he was. He was a personal friend and the land-racing community is less for his loss," Kelly said according to the Associated Press.

Warner was riding his turbo Suzuki Hayabusa at the time of the crash.

The racer had previously hit 311 mph on the same 1.5 mile course back in 2011.Kelly said Warner's 2011 mark is considered to be the world land speed record for a conventional motorcycle.

This time he was attempting to hit 300 mph using just a mile of pavement. The event drew approximately 400 people.

The other events scheduled for later on in the day were canceled after the crash. Maine State and Limestone Police are still investigating the scene of the incident.
