New Datsun Hatchback Revealed in Sketches, Available in Eastern Markets Only

Nissan Motor Co.'s Datsun brand revealed sketches this week of the first car that the revived brand will launch in eastern markets later this month.

The Japanese company restored the Datsun brand late last year after being discontinued almost three decades ago, and it plans on selling low-priced cars in emerging markets according to The Wall-Street Journal.

Datsun will introduce its new subcompact hatchback in three markets: India, Indonesia, and Russia by early 2014. The vehicle will reach South Africa after that according to a company press release.

Vehicles will likely be sold for only around $3,000 to $5,000.

"The Datsun cars will be locally developed with the support of Nissan Motor Company engineers and stylists and will be locally produced," the brand's head Vincent Cobee said according to The Wall-Street Journal.

Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn will make an appearance in India to unveil the first new Datsun brand vehicle on July 15. Ghosn's appearance is a sign that India is an important market to Nissan, where small cars like the Datsun could sell up to three quarters of the 1.9 million cars sold in the last fiscal year that ended March 31.

Auto experts expect the South Asian country to become one of if not the top market for automobiles globally by the end of the decade, despite a current decline in sales.

This kind of optimism has allowed companies to build new factories in India and expand existing production plants according to The Wall-Street Journal.
