Nissan Motor Co. has revealed a $100-a-month battery replacement plan for U.S. owners of its Nissan Leaf vehicle.

The plan is set to start in the first half of 2014 according to a company press release.

The plan calls for people to get a new or upgraded battery once they officially enroll according to Reuters. After that, the program works like the Leaf's original battery warranty which says a battery can be replaced or upgraded if its capacity falls below 70 percent.

Nissan's plan was inspired by its own program in Europe and others run by its closest competitors.

Earlier this month, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk revealed his company will invest $50 to $100 million to develop a battery replacement network.

Brand new Leaf cars have a five-year 60,000 mile battery warranty for capacity loss according to Reuters. Nissan doesn't expect many people to start the program until their cars are no longer covered by the battery capacity warranty.

Nissan also has an eight-year, 100,000 mile warranty on defects. The company will offer similar plans in other markets.

On a full charge, the 2013 Lead has a range of 83 miles according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, up from 73 miles for the 2012 Leaf.

Through May, Nissan has sold 7,614 Leaf cars, up approximately 200 percent more than the first five months of 2012 according to Reuters.
