General Motors unveiled its brand-new 4.3L EcoTec3 V-6 engine that will power vehicles like the new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.
The new engine will be the "most capable" V-6 in any full-size pickup truck according to a GM press release.
The company is already claiming the engine will lead its segment in city fuel economy and help save drivers money through a number of new fuel-saving technologies.
"In creating the 2014 Silverado we looked at a wide variety of powertrain configurations, and concluded that large-displacement truck engines could best provide the payload and towing capability that truck customers require, with the long-term dependability they expect," said Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer for Silverado in a company press release.
GM designed the EcoTec3 with engine technology that matches Ram's HFE's with 18 mpg city. The engine beat out models like the 4x4 Silverado and Sierra, which achieves 17 mpg city.
EPA highway estimates are highly competitive however, as 4x4 achieves 22 mpg, and the 2WD vehicles achieve 24 mpg.
The new Silverado and Sierra vehicles will also offer the highest-available payload rating of 2,108 pounds and the highest available towing rating of 7,200 pounds thanks to the EcoTec3 V-6.
"Silverado's EcoTec3 technology eliminates the fuel economy penalty that often goes with rugged, high-torque truck engines," said Luke in the release. "With our EcoTec3 engines, truck customers don't have to do more with less more work with smaller engines. They can keep the benefits of a larger displacement engine and still get better fuel efficiency."
