Edmunds just released its data on the best-selling vehicles in the United States last year, and to no one's surprise, it was Ford once again that reigned supreme. The Ford F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle (and truck) in the United States for more than 40 years now, and that remained the case in 2021.
The Chevrolet Silverado came in second in that department, followed by Ram 1500/2500/3500 and the Toyota RAV4, which ranked third and fourth, respectively. Rounding out the top 10 best-selling vehicles in the U.S. are the Honda CR-V (fifth), Toyota Camry (sixth), Honda Civic (seventh), Toyota Highlander (eighth), GMC Sierra (ninth), and the Toyota Tacoma (10th).
Ford's flagship pickup's popularity was spread out, with the F-Series topping best-selling vehicle charts in 19 states last year. The Ram 1500/2500/3500 pickup trucks followed closely behind, topping vehicle sales in 10 different states in 2021.
Midwesterners love Ford F-Series and Chevy Silverado
Eight states had the Chevy Silverado as their best-selling vehicle last year. The Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V were named the best-selling vehicle in five different states in 2021. The Tacoma and Corolla models of Toyota and the Honda Civic earned that recognition, each appearing as the best-selling vehicle in one state last year.
The figures used in this study only factored in retail sales of new vehicles, and the data did not include rental sales or registrations from government bodies. The numbers collected show the popularity of vehicles in the United States being somewhat regional.
Customers in the Midwestern region of the U.S. preferred pickup trucks with the Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverado leading vehicle sales in that area. Southerners loved their pickup trucks as well, while Alaska was undoubtedly a trucker state with five of its best-selling vehicles last year being truck models.
The RAV4 was popular in New England, while the CR-V led sales in some Northeastern states. Compact sedans still were a popular choice for the sunshine states, with the Honda Civic topping the charts in California and the Toyota Corolla claiming the top spot in Florida.

F-150 production halted as semiconductor shortage hits Ford
Ford announced some disappointing news regarding the most popular vehicle in the United States. On Friday, February 25, the Detroit automaker said that it would stop production in its Kansas City assembly plant for a week due to the ongoing global semiconductor shortages. Among the vehicles made in that factory are the company's famous F-150 pickup trucks.
That is a huge blow for Ford as the F-150, along with other vans and large utility vehicles, generates the bulk of the company's profit globally. The news comes after Ford announced earlier this month that it would continue to idle some of its assembly plants in the United States in the week of February 14 due to supply chain issues.
A shortage of semiconductors has hit plenty of automakers across the globe, forcing some of them to produce vehicles without certain features.
