Luxury carmaker Automobili Lamborghini remains confident that India will eventually become one of its main markets in the Asia Pacific region after the Italian manufacturer posted solid growth in the subcontinent last year.
Lamborghini sold 69 units in India in 2021, an 86 percent increase compared to its 2020 numbers. Lamborghini managed to sell 37 vehicles that year, a disappointing figure but also expected given the COVID-19 pandemic was starting to wreak havoc across the globe at that time. That halted the momentum of Lamborghini, which sold a record 52 units in 2019.
Lamborghini has now beaten that 2019 record with its sales last year. Lamborghini cars are pricey to say the least, with the cheapest model selling for Rs 3.16 crore. Some of its vehicles even reach a staggering price of Rs 4.99 crore at the Indian showrooms.
Lamborghini's Indian sales still lag behind Mercedes-Benz's
Lamborghini's sales may have risen in India last year but they are still far off from the numbers being posted by their rival automakers. Mercedes-Benz emerged as India's favorite luxury car brand in 2021, selling 11,242 units for a 42.5 percent year-on-year growth.
Lamborghini's sales in India were way behind the numbers posted by the Italian carmaker in China, Japan and South Korea, their top three markets in the Asia Pacific region. Lamborghini made major inroads in the world's largest vehicle market, selling 935 units in China last year. Lamborghini also had a banner year in South Korea, recording 354 deliveries in 2021.
Even Thailand generated more Lamborghini sales than India, with 75 units sold in the Southeast Asian nation. Automobili Lamborghini Asia-Pacific Regional Director Francesco Scardaoni remains bullish on India, though, telling reporters that India has a strong potential to rank higher in the top 10 markets for APAC in the future.

Scardaoni believes Indian market will grow in the next two years
Scardaoni said "In terms of market you can see how India is growing and of course this growth will also be projected in the next few years." He added that Lamborghini has a positive outlook for India in the years 2022 and 2023, with the luxury automaker projecting really good and positive numbers in the country.
What gives Scardaoni hope in the future is the growing popularity of Lamborghini's new products, particularly its super luxury SUV Urus. Around 50 percent of Lamborghini's sales in India last year was courtesy of this vehicle. 5,021 units of the Urus were sold last year by Lamborghini, bringing in many first time buyers in the process.
Seventy percent of customers, who acquired the Urus, were new to the Lamborghini brand. Urus has been a popular choice for customers, who want to go out with family and friends on a drive on a luxury SUV. Scardaoni added that the Urus is a perfect car for the Indian market and the results are showing that they are on the right track.
