General Motors definitely means business when it comes to electrification. The automaker is set to invest $6.5 billion for the development of two electric vehicle and EV battery production plants in the state of Michigan.
GM investment to create 4,000 new jobs
General Motors' grand plans surfaced ahead of the January 25 board meeting of the Michigan Strategic Fund, with the massive investment set to create 4,000 jobs in the suburbs of Lansing, particularly in Delta Township, and Orion Township in Eaton County.
The Michigan Strategic Fund's Board of Directors is expected to approve state tax incentives for automakers, including General Motors. The exact value of those incentives has not been revealed by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
GM is expected to announce the landmark deal at an event in Lansing, Michigan on Tuesday, January 25. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer will then deliver her State of the State address the following day, with the speech expected to shed some details on the job creations by the Michigan automakers following their transition to electrification.
GM Spokesperson Dan Flores was delighted with his company's impending deal with the state of Michigan, saying "GM appreciates the support it has received from the Governor, the State Legislature, Orion Township, the City of Lansing and Delta Township related to two prospective projects that GM is considering in Orion Township and Lansing." Flores added that until these projects gain final approval, GM has no comment on potential announcement timing.

GM has numerous plans for EV facilities
GM has been focusing on developing more EV facilities with the auto industry shifting to electrification in recent years. GM has started building the Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center, an all-new facility that will significantly expand the automaker's battery technology operations and also accelerate the commercialization and development of the company's more affordable longer-range electric vehicle batteries. The facility will be completed in the middle of this year and is expected to build its first prototype cells in the final quarter of 2022.
General Motors has just unveiled plans to launch 30 new electric cars by the year 2025. Some of these models will be manufactured at the Orion Assembly Plant, the facility where the Chevrolet Bolt EV is made. GM just got a tax rebate worth $1.3 billion for this particular assembly plant.
Michigan wanted badly to land GM's next battery factory with the State Parliament competing at Whitmer's desk before Christmas for a massive $1 billion tax incentive fund, an amount paid for by the Federal Stimulation Fund.
That has paid dividends with GM set to expand the Orion Parliamentary Complex, a move that will result in the creation of 2,000 new jobs by the year 2028. The plants that GM will build in Lansing are expected to supply batteries to its Factory Zero and CAMI facilities in Detroit and Ontario respectively.
