School Helicopter Crash Kills 3 Crewmembers in Kentucky (VIDEO)

A medical helicopter crashed in the parking lot of an elementary school in Kentucky this week, killing all three crewmembers aboard the plane.

The accident occurred in Clay County around 11:00 p.m. on June 6 according to Air Evac Lifeteam in a press statement.

"We are devastated at the loss of these crew members who we consider family," company officials said according to the Associated Press.. "We have no details regarding the cause of the accident but will be working with the NTSB in coming days as they conduct their investigation."

Witnesses said there was heavy fog at the time of the crash, though forecasters reported there was "no severe weather" according to the Associated Press.

There was no patient on board the helicopter at the time of the crash.

The helicopter was a Bell 206 LongRanger and came down in the parking lotof Paces Creek Elementary School.

"(The helicopter was) completely refurbished with wiring, components" in May 2012 making it "more powerful and capable of carrying higher gross weight," according to company spokeswoman Julie Heavrin, who spoke with the Associated Press.

Air Evac Lifeteam operates 114 bases in 15 states around the U.S. The last crash occurred in Arkansas in 2010.

The company identified the crewmembers as pilot Eddie Sizemore, flight paramedic Herman "Lee" Dobbs and flight nurse Jesse Jones. The crewmembers were on their back to base in Manchester after transporting a patient to a hospital according to the Associated Press.

Federal air safety officials are planning on investigating the accident.
