A new Cheerios commercial that features an interracial family received so many racially motive hate comments on YouTube that the website shut down the video's comments section.
The 30-second ad debuted on May 28 and has received over 4,600 likes and 709 dislikes as of press time.
The commercial was created to show the potential health benefits that go along with choosing Cheerios for breakfast, but thousands of YouTube viewers completely missed the overall message.
Before the comments section was shut down it had been filled with references to Nazis, racial genocide and other hateful comments that forced YouTube to step in according to AdWeek.
Other YouTube users called the ad "disgusting" while others said it made them "want to vomit."
Despite receiving thousands of negative comments on YouTube, General Mills is happy with the commercial and it has been "well-received" since they released it to the public earlier this week.
"Consumers have responded positively to our new Cheerios ad At Cheerios, we know there are many kinds of families and we celebrate them all," Camille Gibson, vice president of marketing for Cheerios, said in a press statement.
Racist comments about the commercial have appeared on the company's Facebook page as well, though some have commented back telling those who don't like the commercial to "not watch it" instead of ruining a feel-good advertisement.
