A member of the women's golf team at a West Coast Conference school was sanctioned by the NCAA for washing her car on campus according to University of Portland basketball coach Eric Reveno.
Reveno tweeted about the incident on May 29 after he learned about the issue during a conference meeting.
The school reported the extra benefits violation to the NCAA according to Yahoo Sports.
After learning that the golfer used water that is not available to other students attending the university, they asked the golfer to pay the school $20, which they claimed was the value of the water and the hose used to wash her car.
NCAA spokeswoman Dana Thomas emailed a statement to Yahoo Sports that her organization "did not participate in the decision" and "does not consider the car wash to have been an extra benefits violation."
When asked why the golfer was fined, Thomas said "it seems there was a miscommunication at some level" and the WCC is working with the school to figure out a more appropriate solution according to ESPN.
A spokesman for the WCC did not know any further details, but a source familiar with the circumstances revealed what happened.
If college athletes are going to be charged with using water for their cars, who knows what else they'll be fined with in the future.
