A recent study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that women drivers between the ages of 21-30 have a 25.9 percent higher risk of drying in a car crash than men of the same age.
Female passengers in that age group are also a greater risk than men of the same age, as they have a 29.2 percent higher risk of dying in a crash according to the study.
The NHTSA indicates that men tend to be "larger and stronger" than women, and are more likely to survive a serious crash than women.
"Young adult females are more fragile than males of the same age, but later in life women are less frail than their male contemporaries," NHTSA said in the study according to USA Today.
The study did show that older drivers, men and women, have the same chance of dying in a crash.
Men and women between the ages of 35 and 70 have approximately the same chance of dying in a car crash according to the NHTSA.
Women between the ages of 65 and 74 are actually a 1.4 percent lower risk than men in the same age group.
In general, all drivers are a risk of getting into a car crash, it's just a matter of if a driver chooses to be safe on the roads or not.
"Occupants' fatality risk, given similar physical impacts, grows by 3 percent or slightly more for each year that they get older, starting at about 21," NHTSA said in the study.
The overall risk of dying in a crash went down 42 percent from 1995 through 2002, and the number continues to drop despite still being one of the top causes of death in the U.S. The NHTSA noted that the decline is thanks to more people using seat belts and more airbags located in new vehicles.
