Five teens were killed in a fiery California crash that split a car in half in Newport Beach, California.

The names of the three females and two males killed in the crash are expected to be released later this week according to Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

The Infiniti sedan carrying the five people veered off a road around 5:20 p.m. and hit a tree. The impact split the car in half and it caught fire according to Kathy Lowe, Newport Beach police spokeswoman.

"When we arrived we found what we thought were two vehicles," Newport fire Capt. Glenn White, who was on duty at the Balboa fire station, said according to The Los Angeles Times. "One was on fire."

The vehicle was believed to be going well over the speed limit at the time of the crash.

The legal speed limit on Jamboree Road, a major street in Orange County, is 55 mph according to the Associated Press.

"It was a horrific accident," Lowe said, who also confirmed that investigators were on scene for over 12 hours according to the Associated Press.

Four people were ejected from the car and died immediately, the fifth was ejected and was later declared dead at a hospital.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

"I've been on duty for almost 30 years, and I've seen some terrible vehicular accidents," White said. "This was, if not the worst, one of the worst I've ever seen."
