General Motors confirmed this week that it has started selling the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel, its first diesel passenger vehicle in the U.S. since 1986.
As of May 23, Chevrolet has already sold "a few" Cruze diesels as the vehicle is available in 13 select metro dealerships already according to Chevrolet Vice President of Marking Chris Perry.
The Cruze Clean Turbo will become available throughout the U.S. this fall.

Chevy said earlier this year that the Cruze is fitted with a 151-hp 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine produced in Germany.
"We harnessed generations of diesel expertise here and in Europe to adapt our world-class global engine for the North American market," said Gary Altman, chief engineer, Chevrolet Cruze Diesel in a press statement. "Chevrolet is redefining the meaning of great fuel economy with this car."

The Cruze can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds according to Gary Altman, chief engineer of the new model. The vehicle has a 46-mpg EPA highway rating for fuel efficiency.
Compared to gasoline models, the diesel will be faster to accelerate up freeway ramps into traffic and passing other cars on two-lane roads according to Chevrolet.
Chevy expects the Cruze to compete directly against Volkswagens Jetta TDI, which the company views as the "benchmark" in diesel compact vehicles according to USA Today.
The Cruze has more horsepower (151 against 140), highway fuel-efficiency (46 mpg against 42 mpg) and torque (264 lb-ft against 236 lb-ft) when compared to the VW Jetta.
With a starting price of $25,695, including an $810 destination charge, the Cruze is also better value than the VW Jetta as well according to GM. The Cruze also offers a number of different standard features like the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, leather seats, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
