The 2018 BMW X3 has been spotted again while testing on the Nurburgring track. Spy photos and video hints on the M401 model that is expected to be the top-of-the-line variant. Is the next-generation SUV ready to debut very soon?
Spy photos reveal the new model is still hiding under little camouflage and is not generous to conceal its engine. However, while the next-generation X3 has been spied undergoing the test, the growling noise it created led analysts to predict it could be the M40i version.
By the sound of it, it does not sound as angry as the quad-exhaust-equipped mule that was spied last year. Theories predict the spotted prototype could be running with twin exhausts from the rear with low-key tires and huge wheels. It might also be sporting decent-size brakes and subtle aero package for the body.
Underneath, the new BMW X3 is speculated to sport the brand's 3.0-liter turbo inline six engine, similar to the M3/M4. It is predicted to deliver 317kW power.
Whereas, the M40i variant is expected to run with the same 3.0-liter turbo engine of the M240i that can produce 250kW and 500Nm of torque. In addition, the engine is linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission with Launch Control feature.
In another report, the diesel models of the new X3 are expected to generate the biggest shares in the forecasted sales report. The latest BMW 7 Series six-cylinder diesel engine will most likely be retained for the X3 30d. This engine variant is expected to produce 262bhp. Moreover, the X3 20d variant is expected to acquire the biggest sales figures for its new 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine.
The SUV prototype spotted seems to confirm the top of the line variant of the next-generation X3. Reports claim the X3 M40i would be the superior class in the new X3 lineup.
Meanwhile, car analysts predict that the 2018 BMW X3 will most likely be launched soon. The automaker has been testing the prototypes of the new model in various instances, hinting the nearing of the debut. The new SUV is speculated to be launched in the next six months while others say it can come out in the next few days.
