Apple said that its customers have downloaded over 50 billion applications from its App Store since its launch in 2008.
Apple Inc. said on May 16 that the 50th billionth download was a game called "Say the Same Thing" by Space Inch according to the Associated Press.
"The App Store completely transformed how people use their mobile devices and created a thriving app ecosystem that has paid out over nine billion dollars to developers," said Eddy Cue, senior vice president of Internet Software and Services in a press statement.
Earlier this month, Apple revealed that the 50 billion download was coming up, and would award the person who downloaded the milestone app.
Apple announced that the winner of the $10,000 App Store Gift Card was Brandon Ashmore, of Mentor, Ohio according to USA Today.
The App Store had just 500 apps when it first opened five years ago, and now has approximately 850,000 individual apps for devices like the iPod Touch, iPad, and iPhone.
Customers download approximately 800 apps per second from the App Store, a rate which equals two billion apps per month.
The top 25 paid and free apps fir the iPhone and iPad was revealed by Apple last month. According to the study Angry Birds, Facebook, Pandora, and Instagram were among the top downloaded apps according to Apple.
Apple's App Store hit 10 billion downloads back in early 2011, and 25 billion last March. Apple also celebrated the 10th anniversary of iTunes earlier this month according to a company press release.
Apple is scheduled to hold its developer's event on June 10, where the company is expected to outline the next versions of its iOS operating system and the iPhone 5S.
The 50 billion mark does not include updates or re-downloads according to Apple.
