Chrysler is recalling 469,000 Jeep SUVs worldwide due to a shift issue that could cause the vehicle's to shit by itself from Park into neutral.

The recall includes 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander models according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The problem increases the risk of rollaway. The recalls were disclosed in three separate filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The NHTSA started looking into the issue after a customer complained that their SUV rolled away in January of 2012.

The recall covers 295,000 vehicles in the U.S., 28,500 in Canada, and 4,200 in Mexico. The remaining 141,000 vehicles are outside North America according to the NHTSA.

"A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away, increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury."

The Jeep Grand Cherokees involved in the recall were built from February 11, 2004 through March 9, 2010 according to the NHTSA. The Jeep Commanders involved were built from January 31, 2005 through March 10, 2010.

The issue has resulted in 26 different accident, two injuries, but no fatalities according to Chrysler spokesman Eric Mayne, who spoke with Edmunds about the issue.

After being notified, owners will be asked to visit their local Chrysler dealer to have the issue fixed. Repairs will be made free of charge.

Chrysler said the recall will begin in June, and owners can call Chrysler for more information at 1-800-853-1403.
