The passengers of a "flying car" that crashed in British Columbia on May 10 are reportedly "recovering" after suffering non-life threatening injuries according to a report by The Globe and Mail.

The aircraft, known as the Maverick, is a car with a plane engine on the back and has fabric wings that allow the vehicle to fly.

This is the first incident of its kind according to local authorities.

The vehicle, which operates like a paraplane, suffered a malfunction during takeoff and crash landed near a local school shortly after takeoff at the Vernon airport.

"The aircraft had just taken off from the Vernon Airport and appeared to be returning for an approach back to the airport when it got into trouble and crashed into the trees," said Gord Molendyk, with the RCMP according to the Vernon Morning Star.

The vehicle crashed into a fence near the school, and shortly after the parachute released and the aircraft wound up in nearby trees.

No one was hurt on the ground below as all the students and faculty members were inside, though the school was preparing to have their track and field day before the incident.

"A lot of the kids saw it around school this morning," said Dale Olsen, a teacher at the nearby Fulton Secondary School according to The Canadian Press. They said it looked like it stalled, the parachute started crumpling up and they couldn't get it going again."

The aircraft is reportedly street legal and had Florida plates according to the Vernon Morning Star.

The $94,000 vehicle is FAA certified, has a top speed of 40 mph and can fly has high as 10,000 feet according to the Vernon Morning Star.

Using a 100-meter runway, the car can take off and fly under a parasail, but also needs a 100-meter runway to make a safe landing according to The Vancouver Sun.

The owner of the company that makes the Maverick said that the cause of the crash is currently unknown according to Jalopnik.
