Aston Martin Rapide S To Become First Hydrogen Car To Compete in the 24 Hours of Nurburgring (VIDEO)

The Aston Martin Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S completed the first hydrogen, zero CO2 emission lap of Germany's Nurburgring Circuit this week.

The 15-mile lap and was completed in preparation for next month's 24 Hours of Nurburgring, in which Aston Martin will enter its car in the E1-XP experimental class of the endurance race according to Edmunds.

The vehicle is based on the new 2014 Aston Martin Rapide S that will start appearing at dealerships in May according to a company press release.

The historic lap was completed by Aston Martin CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez on April 27.

The Rapide S is equipped with a prototype twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 engine that can run on gasoline, hydrogen or both.

Aston Martin also revealed the car includes a hydrogen and gasoline tank, which can both be used to fuel the engine during the race.

Since the lap was so successful, Aston Martin is now confident that the car will perform well at the 24 hours of Nurburgring. The vehicle hit 60 mph in 4.9 seconds at obtained a top speed of 190 mph according to the company press release.

Aston Martin described the lap as a "perfect test run ahead of a formal record-breaking attempt at the ADAC Zurich 24 Hours of Nurburgring" in May according to Edmunds.
