Three abalone divers were killed in separate incidents over the weekend in Northern California. A very low tide drew divers to nearby beaches to look for sea snails according to the Associated Press.

The body of a 66-year-old retired Pacifica firefighter was seen on April 27 in the water off of Sonoma County's Shell each according to the report.

"The surf was absolutely pounding on us," said tactical flight officer and Sonoma County sheriff's Deputy Henri Boustany, who helped with the recovery according to the Press Democrat.

A second body was pulled out by divers on April 28 after the man got caught in a rip tide off nearby Salt Point State Park. The 36-year-old was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital.

Hours later a third diver was found dead according to Sonoma County Sheriff Sgt. Ed Hoener. The man was found 15 feet below the water and might have been "snagged" in rocks according to Hoener.

"It is the busiest we've been in that short amount of time with that many horrible outcomes," said Paul Bradley, a 12-year sheriff's helicopter pilot according to the Press Democrat.

Six state parks officers and lifeguards were on duty along 40 miles of Sonoma County's coastline and aided several divers during the weekend.

More than 100 people were at the Fort Bragg beach with about 20 divers in the water as they were pulling the deceased diver from the water.

The identities of the divers were not released as of press time.
