Subaru of American announced they're recalling approximately 10,137 2014 Subaru Foresters due to an issue with the floor mats according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The problem with the floor mats is that they may curl when exposed to heat, which interferes with the vehicle's clutch, brake, or gas pedals. The NHTSA determined the issue was serious as the mat increases the chance of a crash.
"The backing for the carpeted floor mats was not manufactured to specification," said NHTSA according to Edmunds. "As a result, the floor mats may curl when exposed to heat.
The vehicles were manufactured during the first three months of 2013, but the resin composition used for the floor mat backing was not "made properly" according to the NHTSA.
Workers reportedly first noticed the issue when the vehicles arrived in the U.S. from Japan according to The New York Times.
"Curling of the driver side floor mat could distract the driver and/or interfere with proper operation of one or a combination of, the vehicle's clutch, brake, and accelerator pedals," the NHTSA said according to Edmunds. "Brake or accelerator pedal interference may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop the vehicle, which could cause a crash."
Subaru dealers will replace the four carpeted floor mats with new ones free of charge according to a company spokesman. The company will issue an interim notification to their customers by the end of this month.
This isn't the first time the company has dealt with an issue like this. Back in Toyota Motor Corp recalled nearly 3.8 million vehicles because the floor mats could be trapped under the accelerator pedal according to Reuters.
They have not released a specific date owners can expect to start receiving letters regarding the recall.
Anyone with further questions regarding the recall can contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783.
