Authorities said smoke inhalation killed four young children in South Carolina mobile home fire according to the Associated Press.
It took firefighters under 10 minutes to put the fire out once they arrived, but once they entered the charred mobile-home, they found the bodies of 10-month-old twin sisters and their older brothers.
Authorities have not been able to determine what caused the fire, and they're not currently sure where their mother was at the time the fire started.
"Right now we can't say whether she was inside or not," Darlington County Sheriff Wayne Byrd said according to the Associated Press.
The mother was so "distraught" that it took hours for her to calm down according to Byrd. Police officials have kept people away from the home, located in a city of 8,000 people, as they continue their investigation.
A photograph appeared on Twitter after the incident showing that the home relatively undamaged from the outside, but the inside was a different story.
Autopsies on the children started today, April 25, to determine the official cause of death and confirm the identities of the children, Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee said.
"Our hearts are heavy for these four young children. God have mercy on their souls. We did everything possible to save them," Hartsville Mayor Mel Pennington said in a press statement.
Neighbors even attempted to help put the fire out to get to the children, but were unsuccessful until first responders arrived to the scene.
"There wasn't anything I could do," one neighbor told the Hartsville Messenger. "It started burning too fast."
