General Motors announced this week that they'll be releasing 17 new or updated models in China this year according to a company press release.

GM vehicle sales in China increased 11.3 percent last year to a record 2.84 million according to GM president Bob Socia.

"This year we're going to roll out 17 new or refreshed models in China," said Socia during a press conference.

GM has already launched a Cadillac the XTS luxury sedan in China earlier this year and plans on expanding their luxury vehicles by the end of 2013. A new advertising campaign featuring actor Brad Pitt has been shot and will premiere soon according to Socia.

Other new models that will be launched in 2013 include updated versions of the Buick LaCrosse, three Opel vehicles, and Buick Excelle.

"There's lots of competition here and everyone wants a piece of this pie," said Socia. "As competitive as it is, it's probably the only market in the world that offers the types of opportunities that this market offers."

China's auto market could increase to 30 or 35 million vehicles by 2023 thanks to an "expanding population" according to Socia.

China sold approximately 19.31 million models in 2012, a 4.3 percent increase from a year earlier according to the China Association of Automobile Manufactures.

GM has plans to introduce a new Cadillac in China every year through 2016 according to Socia.
