At least 40 people have been killed by a major earthquake near the Iran-Pakistan border today, April 16.

The quake has been called the largest to hit Iran in nearly 50 years, although the exact details of the damage have yet to be revealed according to Press TV.

Iran's seismological center reported that the magnitude 7.7 quake was centered near Saravan and shook buildings as far away as New Delhi and Dubai according to the Associated Press.

Iran's Red Crescent said it was facing a "complicated emergency situation" in the area with villages scattered over desolate hills and valleys.

The earthquake struck less than a week after a 6.1 magnitude quake hit near Bushehr, killing approximately 37 people in the process according to the Associated Press.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague sent out a Twitter message shortly after the quake to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives during what is being called a "massive earthquake."

At least six people were killed in Pakistan and around 47 others were injured according to state-run Pakistan Television. Up to 1,000 mud homes were damaged as well.

The quake period was "long" and took place when many people were home for "midday nap" said Manouchehr Karimi, a resident in the quake zone according to the Associated Press.

Pakistani news stations have been showing people trying to run out of buildings and homes as they were being destroyed or shaken up in the southern city of Karachi.

Back in 2003, approximately 26,000 people were killed by a magnitude 6.6 quake that flattened the historic southeastern Iranian city of Bam according to the Associated Press.
