The Ford Focus has officially been named the best-selling vehicle in the country after Toyota disputed the fact earlier this week.

Sales for the vehicle reached 1.02 million last year according to Polk. Coming in a No. 2 was the Toyota Corolla at 872,774. Ford F-Series finished at No. 3 with 785,630 models sold in the U.S. according to a Ford press release.

"Focus and Fiesta represent the culmination of our One Ford global product strategy," said Jim Farley, Ford executive vice president, global marketing, sales and service and Lincoln. "Our global products are resonating with consumers - especially in the best-selling, most competitive segments - with their unique combination of fuel efficiency, high quality, rich content and fun-to-drive personalities. Through One Ford, we're able to bring economies of scale and fantastic value to customers all around the world."

Sales increased 51 percent in China and 40 percent in the U.S. according to a company press release. The company stated their global growth is already "off to a great start" and sales in 2013 should be even better.

This is the second consecutive year in a row that the Focus outsold the Toyota Corolla according to Polk. Polk counts vehicles by nameplate, so specific versions of the Corolla sold under different names were not counted according to the Associated Press.

The number Toyota released doesn't include Corolla based models like the Auris, Auris Hybrid, Verso, E'z, Matrix, Scion xB and Rukus as well so it's unknown why the company's number and Polk's number are so far off.

"Since its launch in China in late March of last year, Focus sales continue to strengthen, with the car now ranking as the best-selling passenger car in China in 2012 for the first time ever," Farley said. "With additional manufacturing capacity added last year, we now have a tremendous opportunity to further strengthen our global small car sales in 2013, with sales off to a very strong start already."
