The 2017 GMC Canyon is a premium midsize pickup truck that is easier to maneuver than larger trucks and is more capable than most of the midsize pickups. With its quiet cabin and a high level of standard equipment, it is destined to win over the buyers.
As reported by Car and Driver, the 2017 GMC Canyon is cosmetically same as the GMC Sierra. The car comes with three-engine choices including a 308 horsepower V6 and a class-exclusive diesel four-cylinder that makes 369 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission.
Out of all the engine choices, the 2.5-liter inline-four engine is the worst of them. The higher trim levels come with GM’s latest 3.6-liter V6 that not only is it equipped with cylinder deactivation in an attempt to preserve fuel, but it is one of the quickest mid-size pickups as well. The middle 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder engine sacrifices track speed in favor of fuel efficiency and towing proficiency.
Out of the three engines, the 2.5-liter has the worst towing capacity of just 3500 pounds. The V-6 is capable of towing 7000 pounds if equipped with the Trailering package. On the inside, the GMC Canyon provides a spacious interior that is focused more on function than on flash. It features an upright instrument panel and controls that are easy to reach and read. The only drawback is that even in the highest Denali trim the cabin doesn’t feel like a premium environment.
The infotainment system is one of the best in its class. It comes with features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, as well as user-friendly controls. However, the base models don’t offer touchscreen infotainment systems. They rely on a 4.2-inch color display.
According to Cars, the 2017 Canyon comes with a low sticker price. The pricing starts at $21,000 but for this price you’ll only get two seats. If you want four seats, you’ll need to pay around $24,000. You’ll also have to spend more if you want four-wheel drive or a five-seat Crew Cabin. Overall, the GMC Canyon is still a solid value with great fuel economy and best warrant coverage offered by GM.
